RI Receives $5.2 Million to Start Up New Health Exchange

In an effort to help increase competition among health insurance companies, reduce health care costs for consumers, and provide more Rhode Islanders with access to quality, affordable coverage, the state’s Congressional delegation today announced that Rhode Island will receive $5.2 million in federal funding to set up an online system where Rhode Islanders may shop for health insurance.

Cicilline Introduces Make It In America Block Grant Legislation
In recognition of National Small Business Week, Congressman Cicilline, supported by Rhode Island and New England manufacturing representatives, unveiled his Six Point Manufacturing Plan for Rhode Island, including the official introduction of his Make it in America Block Grant Act of 2011 at a press conference in Pawtucket at the former Paramount Cards Company.

Congressman Cicilline Joins Woonsocket Police Officers in 450-Mile Annual COPS Walks
In recognition of National Police Week, U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) joined members of the Woonsocket Police Department for their 11th annual COPs Walk. Beginning on May 9, 2011, Sergeant Edward Cunnanan lead 12 members on a 4-day walk from Woonsocket, RI to Washington, DC. Congressman Cicilline joined the officers near the end of the 450-mile relay-walk.

RI Delegation Wants $21 Billion in Deficit Reduction by Eliminating Taxpayer Subsidies for Big Oil

With the Senate scheduled for a key vote this week, U.S. Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) are strongly backing a plan to eliminate special tax breaks for the five largest oil companies and direct those savings to decrease the national deficit.

Cicilline, Langevin Announce RI Rail Grants, Stress Importance to State's Recovery

U.S. Congressmen David Cicilline and James Langevin announced U.S. Department of Transportation grants for Rhode Island rail projects that will create jobs and help provide more efficient travel. The resources, which were made available when Florida Governor Rick Scott rejected high speed rail funding earlier this year, included $25 million for an additional 1.5 miles of a third track in South Kingstown that will be able to manage high-speed trains, and $3 million for renovation work at the station in Providence.

Rhode Islanders Need Immediate Price Relief at the Pump

Just as gas prices in Rhode Island topped $4 per gallon, Congressman Cicilline urged House Speaker John Boehner to bring two measures to the House Floor for a vote that would provide immediate relief to consumers from the rising price of gasoline. In a letter to Speaker John Boehner, Cicilline wrote, “Until our nation makes the necessary and sustained investments in clean-energy technology that will once and for all end our dependence on foreign energy imports and Big Oil, we will continue to be held at the mercy of Wall Street speculators artificially driving up fuel prices.”
