Following Call for Congressional Action, Cicilline Praises Obama’s Strong Leadership on Gun Violence Prevention
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the House sponsor of the Firesale Loophole Closing Act, issued the following statement after President Obama announced his legislative agenda to reduce gun violence in the United States:
“President Obama demonstrated decisive leadership today when he announced 23 executive actions that will help to enhance the federal background check system and help keep guns from individuals who should not have them. By taking bold action today, the President demonstrated that he will not wait to ensure the safety and well-being of children and communities across our nation. I applaud him and Vice President Biden for leading this important effort.”
“Congress should swiftly enact legislation that requires a universal background check on any gun sales, bans military-style assault weapons, makes it illegal to sell or own high-capacity magazines, and increases penalties for people who help criminals illegally acquire guns. I am proud to support legislation that would help accomplish these goals, including my Firesale Loophole Prevention Act, the Fix Gun Checks Act, the Gun Show Loophole Closing Act, and the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act among other commonsense proposals.”
“Republicans and Democrats should recognize that there is nothing more important than ensuring that children and families can be safe at school, the workplace, and in their homes. Following so many horrific tragedies in Aurora, Newtown, and communities across our nation, it is critical that we act now.”
