CUMBERLAND, RI– Earlier this week, Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) visited the B.F. Norton Elementary School to visit with students and teachers as part of his effort to make stops at area schools across his district during his term as a Member of Congress. Rep Cicilline took time to help the students at B.F. Norton Elementary School learn more about how Congress works by reading "House Mouse, Senate Mouse" written and illustrated by Cheryl Shaw Barnes and Peter W. Barnes.
“I thank the administrators at B.F. Norton Elementary School in Cumberland for providing me with the opportunity to reinforce the importance of reading to their students,” said Congressman Cicilline, “Reading skills are critical to the success of students in schools and in life. It is important that students receive a world-class education that includes an emphasis on reading proficiency. The rate of students proficient in reading right now has serious implications for our economy and will determine the level of success that we are able to achieve as a nation.”
B.F. Norton Elementary School serves grades K-5 in the Cumberland School District. Congressman Cicilline read to a class of about 20 students at the school in recognition of the National Education Association’s Read Across America, a national effort motivate children to read.
