Cicilline Statement on War Powers Vote

Jan 9, 2020

WASHINGTON – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today:

“There is no question that President Trump’s directive to kill a high-ranking Iranian general was a strategic setback. It forced us to suspend operations against ISIS. It led to Iran announcing it would no longer adhere to any of the limits imposed on its nuclear weapons program. It damaged our relationship with Iraq’s government, resulted in a military strike on American bases, and could result in thousands more troops being sent to the region. In short, it was dangerous, reckless, and made America less safe.”

“After three years, it’s clear the President does not have a strategy when it comes to the Middle East. Today, we are making clear that Congress will not authorize another endless, unnecessary war in that part of the world.”
