Cicilline Statement on Trump Ending Immigration Protections for Liberians

Mar 28, 2018

PAWTUCKET – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today on President Trump ending protections for Liberian immigrants who reside legally in the United States:

“Rhode Island is home to thousands of Liberian men, women, and children. Many have called our state home for nearly 30 years. They have started families here. They have raised their children here. As good, honest members of our communities, they contribute to our economy and they pay taxes. Every day, they make Rhode Island an even better place to live.”

“President Trump’s decision to end their immigration status is senseless and cruel. It will do nothing to improve our country. It will send thousands back to a country that is still recovering from the devastation of an Ebola outbreak and two civil wars.”

“Congress needs to stand up to the President. Over the next year, until this decision goes into effect, I will continue to press for a vote on the Liberian Refugee Immigration Act (H.R.5072) and the American Promise Act (H.R.4253), both of which will provide the protections that the President will not.”
