Cicilline Statement on Supreme Court Upholding Ohio’s Voter Purge Law

Jun 11, 2018

PAWTUCKET – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), author of the Automatic Voter Registration Act (H.R.2840), issued the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold an Ohio law that allows politicians to purge thousands of citizens from voter registration lists:

“The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. As a country, we are strongest when the greatest number of people participate in our elections. Today’s decision, however, empowers politicians who want to advance their own interests by making it harder for workers, young people, and minorities to make their voices heard at the ballot box.”

“Make no mistake, the right to vote is under attack. In light of the Court’s decision, Congress must take action to ensure that this right is protected. When Democrats take back the House this November, we will make sure that more Americans are able to participate in our democracy.”
