Cicilline Statement on Report That Amazon Manipulated Search Algorithm In Ways That Boosted Its Own Products

Sep 16, 2019

WASHINGTON – House Antitrust Subcommittee Chairman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement in response to today’s report in the Wall Street Journal that e-commerce giant Amazon manipulated its online search system late last year in ways that could benefit its own in-house products:

“This is the kind of self-dealing that benefits powerful corporations, but harms competition, consumers, workers, and small business owners. I’m especially troubled that the evidence cited in today’s report appears to contradict sworn testimony that Amazon submitted to Congress just a few months ago. Lying to Congress is a serious crime with serious consequences. We will use our investigatory powers to get to the bottom of these disturbing allegations as part of our continuing work to ensure that the Internet is open and competitive.”
