Cicilline Statement on McGahn Ruling

Nov 25, 2019

WASHINGTON - Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement tonight:

“Judge Jackson’s ruling makes clear that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States, and that witnesses must comply with subpoenas issued by Congress in connection with an impeachment inquiry.”

“The Court completely rejected the Administration’s position that officials may claim ‘absolute immunity’ and refuse to testify before Congress. Further, the Court agreed with counsel for the Judiciary Committee, finding no basis in the law for such a claim and ordering the witness to comply with the subpoena.”

“Former White House Counsel Don McGahn must now testify before Congress about what he witnessed during his time in the White House. The same is true for former national security adviser John Bolton and other administration witnesses.”

“This is a good day for anyone who values the rule of law. Both Mr. McGahn and Mr. Bolton should comply with this ruling without any further delay.”
