Cicilline Statement Celebrating the 190th Anniversary of Greek Independence Day
WASHINGTON, DC–U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) released the following statement today honoring Rhode Island’s Greek population on the occasion of Greek Independence Day:
“It is fitting that we honor the people of Greece and those individuals of proud Greek decent here in America and around the world who are celebrating 190 years of independence today for their tremendous cultural and political contributions to our society and others across the world.
“We remember and celebrate the brave efforts of the Hellenes and Philhellenes heroes who fought for the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1832.
“Athenian democracy is deeply rooted in our U.S. Constitution and legal system and the principles of government by the people, equality, justice, and fairness are ideals we model after the Greeks.
“We take the time today to appreciate the rich cultural contributions of our Greek friends and their tremendous influence on our own nation’s system of democracy.”
