Cicilline Slams House Proposal to Cut Billions in Food Stamp Funding

May 13, 2016

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement in response to reports that House Republicans plan to cut funding for food and nutrition assistance by $23 billion in the coming weeks:

“This is yet another example of Republican leaders in Congress not understanding the struggles families face and the growing incidence of hunger in this country."

“There are 54,000 Rhode Island households that can’t afford three meals a day. No parent should ever have to worry about not having enough food to feed their own children, and this latest Republican proposal threatens to make a bad situation even worse.”

“Congress should be ending subsidies for big oil companies and tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas, rather than looking for savings in cutting critical nutrition programs.”This is yet another example of Republican leaders in Congress not understanding the struggles families face and the growing incidence of hunger in this country.
