Rhode Island Congressman will be only American legislator to join lawmakers from three continents for summit in Dublin

PAWTUCKET – U.S. House Antitrust Committee Chairman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) will participate in Thursday’s International Grand Committee on Disinformation and Fake News in Dublin, Ireland.

“This is a pivotal moment,” said Cicilline, who is leading a comprehensive investigation into the state of competition in digital markets. “If we don’t address the weaknesses of the internet as it exists today, we will face insurmountable obstacles for the future of our democracy. The International Grand Committee has brought democratic countries together to present a united front against the threat of disinformation online. I am looking forward to joining them next week and providing a much-needed American perspective on the work we need to do.”

Cicilline was invited to join the International Grand Committee as an ex officio member for this week’s meeting. He will be the first American to question witnesses on strategies and solutions for Western democracies to combat misinformation. Cicilline will take part alongside legislators from the U.K., Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Ireland, Latvia, and Singapore.

The International Grand Committee is the of its kind in more than 80 years. It was formed in 2017 by lawmakers in Europe as a response to Russia’s efforts to weaken Western democracies through aggressive disinformation campaigns that manipulate Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
