Cicilline Applauds President Biden for Taking Action to Reunite Families, Restore Faith in America’s Immigration System

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement today:

“America at its best is a land of opportunity that is open and welcoming to everyone. That’s why, on his very first day in office, President Biden took executive action to protect Dreamers, end the Muslim Ban, and modernize our immigration system. Today, the President is building on that work and making our country a safer, stronger, and more prosperous place by establishing an immigration system that is simpler, fairer, and more humane than the previous administration’s.”

“Donald Trump’s family separation policy was a moral failing. It brought shame to our country. Today, President Biden is making real progress to repair the damage that was done over the past four years. The creation of a family reunification task force is a critical step forward that will bring the full weight of the federal government to work with stakeholders and impacted families until we right this wrong.”

“After four years of Donald Trump insisting that an expensive border wall was the solution to all our problems, I am also pleased that President Biden is actually putting forward a comprehensive framework to address the root causes of migration within the Western Hemisphere and restore faith in our legal immigration system.”

“Make no mistake. This is real progress. We will not, however, completely fix our broken immigration system unless Congress acts. In this vein, the President has submitted the United States Citizenship Act to Congress for our consideration. I look forward to working with his administration and my colleagues to fix our immigration system once and for all.”
