Cicilline Statement on Providence City Council's Citizens United Resolution
Local municipal governments across the nation are recognizing Resolutions Week by passing measures encouraging Congress to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United. U.S. Congressman David Cicilline, who has co-sponsored Constitutional amendments to overturn Citizens United (H.J. Res. 78, H.J. Res. 86 and H.J. Res. 88), issued the following statement after the Providence City Council passed a resolution expressing its opposition to Citizens United:
“I applaud the Providence City Council for voicing its disapproval of Citizens United tonight. This week, the recall election in Wisconsin, where conservative organizations outspent progressives by a margin of 7 to 1, demonstrated that Citizens United has given us a political system that allows corporations and the wealthiest among us to effectively drown out the voices of ordinary Americans. If the Supreme Court declines to scale back the consequences of its decision, Congress should take action to restore a system that works for everyone. I will continue to fight for desperately needed campaign finance reforms.”
