Economy and Jobs

Putting Rhode Island back to work is my single most important priority in Congress. As the United States continues its recovery from one of the most significant economic recessions in our nation’s history, I will fight each day to help save and create jobs in Rhode Island and catalyze economic growth throughout the state.
The strength and well being of our families and communities depend on well-paying jobs and a stable economy. With Rhode Island’s rate of unemployment still among the highest in the country, working families throughout the state need urgent relief. To spur economic growth in the short term, I will work each day to help get capital in the hands of the small business owners and entrepreneurs who form the backbone of our state’s economy. Congress must act to stem the flow of well-paying jobs heading overseas by directing investments to manufacturers here at home, ensuring an even playing field in global trade, and enhancing programs and resources that will help existing manufacturers re-tool their businesses. In addition, while Congress works to stabilize the economy and grow jobs, we must also make certain that unemployment benefits are protected during these challenging times.
I will also work to ensure that Rhode Island’s students have the skills and training to access jobs in the new clean energy and high technology industries – from the manufacturing of renewable energy components, to employment in health services and life sciences, to the design of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Rhode Islanders must be able to compete in the global economy, and I will fight to make certain that learners of all ages have the tools they need.
